A RESOLUTION 1 Designating April 2, 2008, as "Kick Butts Day" in Pennsylvania. 2 WHEREAS, Youth empowerment is an essential element of 3 comprehensive tobacco control; and 4 WHEREAS, The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids has reported that 5 419,810 children became regular smokers in 2007; and 6 WHEREAS, A 2007 study published in the Archives of Pediatrics 7 and Adolescent Medicine indicates that nicotine addiction can 8 develop quickly, within days, among the most susceptible 9 children; and 10 WHEREAS, Tobacco addiction leads to premature death; and 11 WHEREAS, With the global expansion of the tobacco industry, 12 smoking-related deaths are expected to rise to 1 billion by the 13 end of the 21st Century; and
1 WHEREAS, The hazards of secondhand smoke further plague an 2 estimated 700 million children worldwide; and 3 WHEREAS, "Kick Butts Day" is an annual youth-led anti-tobacco 4 initiative of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids; and 5 WHEREAS, On "Kick Butts Day," youths become leaders in the 6 fight against tobacco by standing out, speaking up and seizing 7 control in their homes, schools and communities; therefore be it 8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate April 9 2, 2008, as "Kick Butts Day" in Pennsylvania.
