        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 7, 2006

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the 14th annual Blossburg State Coal Festival from
     2     May 24 through 27, 2006, at Island Park in Blossburg,
     3     Pennsylvania.

     4     WHEREAS, Coal was first discovered in the Blossburg area in
     5  1792, and it was of sufficient quality and quantity that it
     6  became a marketable resource throughout Pennsylvania and New
     7  York and became the preferred coal of blacksmiths in western
     8  mining camps; and
     9     WHEREAS, The mining of coal was labor intensive and brought
    10  many immigrants to America to towns such as Blossburg, Arnot,
    11  Morris Run, Landrus and Fall Brook; and
    12     WHEREAS, William B. Wilson, appointed the first Secretary of
    13  Labor when the United States Department of Labor was formed in

     1  1913, was a Scottish immigrant who moved to Arnot with his
     2  family in 1870, built his life around the coal mining industry
     3  and was a driving force in local and national union movements;
     4  and
     5     WHEREAS, The Blossburg State Coal Festival is a celebration
     6  of the early coal industry in Blossburg and surrounding areas
     7  and the diversity of the people of the region; therefore be it
     8     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
     9  celebration of the 14th annual Blossburg State Coal Festival
    10  from May 24 through 27, 2006, which commemorates the significant
    11  economic history of coal mining in the Blossburg community.
