INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, OCTOBER 11, 2000
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of November 2000 as "Pancreatic Cancer 2 Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, The good health and well-being of the residents of 4 this Commonwealth are enhanced as a direct result of efforts to 5 spread awareness about pancreatic cancer and increase research 6 into finding better methods of early detection, causes and 7 effective treatments for this disease; and 8 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania, proud home to many fine medical 9 institutions, is pleased to join in recognizing and applauding 10 the valuable role families and advocates of pancreatic cancer 11 victims play in helping our medical community to advance the
1 fight against this disease; and 2 WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer is the fourth ranked cause of 3 cancer death among men and women in the United States; and 4 WHEREAS, Since 1950 the annual incidence of pancreatic cancer 5 in the United States has increased from 5.3 to 9.2 cases per 6 100,000 people; and 7 WHEREAS, The mortality rate for pancreatic cancer is the 8 highest of any cancer; and 9 WHEREAS, Nine out of every ten pancreatic cancer patients 10 die; and 11 WHEREAS, There is no cure or early detection test for 12 pancreatic cancer; and 13 WHEREAS, The average life expectancy after diagnosis is three 14 to six months; and 15 WHEREAS, Despite the especially lethal nature of pancreatic 16 cancer, the Federal Government invests less money in researching 17 pancreatic cancer than in all leading cancers; and 18 WHEREAS, It is essential that we work together to support 19 efforts to find ways to attack this deadly disease; therefore be 20 it 21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 22 month of November 2000 as "Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month" in 23 Pennsylvania.
