A RESOLUTION 1 Designating July 4, 2002, as "Colin Powell Day" in Pennsylvania. 2 WHEREAS, United States Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, 3 born on April 5, 1937, in New York City, will receive this
1 year's Philadelphia Liberty Medal at Independence Hall on July 2 4; and 3 WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Liberty Medal was created in 1988 4 during the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the 5 Constitution of the United States to honor those people or 6 organizations which have demonstrated leadership and vision in 7 pursuit of liberty and conscience or freedom from oppression, 8 ignorance or deprivation; and 9 WHEREAS, Secretary Powell remains one of the greatest and 10 most widely celebrated American heroes of our time, and his 11 steadfast patriotism and commitment to social justice are best 12 exemplified by his long and honored career of decorated military 13 service; and 14 WHEREAS, Secretary Powell was commissioned in the Army as a 15 second lieutenant and rose through the ranks to become Chairman 16 of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the first African-American and the 17 youngest person to hold that post; and 18 WHEREAS, Secretary Powell has earned two Purple Hearts, a 19 Bronze Star, a Soldier's Medal and the Legion of Merit; and 20 WHEREAS, Secretary Powell's altruistic and philanthropic 21 efforts are global in reach; and 22 WHEREAS, Two Presidential Medals of Freedom, the President's 23 Citizens Medal, the Congressional Gold Medal, the Secretary of 24 State Distinguished Service Medal, the Secretary of Energy 25 Distinguished Service Medal and other prestigious honors and 26 awards have been conferred on him; therefore be it 27 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate July 4, 28 2002, as "Colin Powell Day" in Pennsylvania and urge all 29 Pennsylvanians to be mindful of the spirit and work of Colin 30 Powell, whose integrity is recognized by Americans across the 20020H0604R3967 - 2 -
