INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, FEBRUARY 7, 2006
A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing February 7, 2006, as "Women's Heart Awareness Day" 2 in Pennsylvania and encouraging all citizens to wear red to 3 raise women's awareness of cardiovascular disease. 4 WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease is America's number one 5 killer; and 6 WHEREAS, Someone dies every 33 seconds from cardiovascular 7 disease; and 8 WHEREAS, Heart disease and stroke affect one out of two 9 women; and 10 WHEREAS, Since 1984, more women than men have died as a 11 result of heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular 12 diseases; and 13 WHEREAS, More than 500,000 females die each year from all 14 heart and blood vessel diseases combined; and
1 WHEREAS, In the United States 38% of women who have heart 2 attacks die within a year; and 3 WHEREAS, More than 45% of women have high cholesterol; and 4 WHEREAS, Women account for nearly 62% of total stroke deaths; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, As the United States population continues to age, 7 more people are at higher risk of cardiovascular disease; and 8 WHEREAS, Heart disease and stroke may be controlled through 9 prevention, detection and treatment of risk factors; and 10 WHEREAS, Compliance with prescription instructions, medical 11 instructions and physician directives is important to 12 cardiovascular health; and 13 WHEREAS, The American Heart Association is committed to 14 public education about heart disease and stroke and urges women 15 to learn about the risk factors for heart disease and stroke and 16 take action to reduce, control or prevent as many risk factors 17 as possible; and 18 WHEREAS, The American Heart Association and its division the 19 American Stroke Association promote the benefits of good health 20 through community service programs and continually incorporate 21 the latest medical advances into programs that help people live 22 healthier, more productive lives; and 23 WHEREAS, The American Heart Association is committed to the 24 support of ongoing medical research on prevention, detection and 25 treatment of heart disease and stroke; and 26 WHEREAS, Since 1949 the American Heart Association spent 27 almost $2.5 billion on research to increase knowledge about 28 cardiovascular disease and stroke; therefore be it 29 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize 30 February 7, 2006, as "Women's Heart Awareness Day" in 20060H0580R3502 - 2 -
1 Pennsylvania and urge all citizens to wear red to support the 2 American Heart Association's "Wear Red Day" event to increase 3 awareness of heart disease, the number one killer of women; and 4 be it further 5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives challenge all 6 citizens of this Commonwealth to take charge of their 7 cardiovascular health and to support the lifesaving mission of 8 the American Heart Association.
