        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 10, 2002

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating May 1, 2002, as "Loyalty Day" in Pennsylvania.

     2     WHEREAS, The Department of Pennsylvania, Veterans of Foreign
     3  Wars, is conducting its annual "Loyalty Day" program on the
     4  grounds of the State Capitol on May 1, 2002; and
     5     WHEREAS, In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into
     6  law Public Law 85-529, which designates May 1 of each year as
     7  "Loyalty Day"; and
     8     WHEREAS, "Loyalty Day" is set aside as a special day for
     9  reaffirming loyalty to the United States and recognizing
    10  American freedom; and


     1     WHEREAS, The President of the United States annually issues a
     2  proclamation calling on officials to proudly display the flag of
     3  the United States on all Government buildings on this special
     4  day; and
     5     WHEREAS, Citizens and elected officials are encouraged to
     6  observe "Loyalty Day" in schools and other appropriate places;
     7  and
     8     WHEREAS, This year, months after the most horrific act of war
     9  on American soil, it is fitting that the citizens of this
    10  Commonwealth pause on "Loyalty Day" to reflect on the privileges
    11  of freedom, democracy and unmatched opportunity we enjoy in the
    12  United States; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 1,
    14  2002, as "Loyalty Day" in Pennsylvania, proudly joining the
    15  Department of Pennsylvania, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in its
    16  observance and commending the department for its continued
    17  service to our nation and this Commonwealth; and be it further
    18     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to VFW
    19  State Commander Charles Beistline on May 1, 2002, at the
    20  "Loyalty Day" program conducted by the Department of
    21  Pennsylvania, Veterans of Foreign Wars, on the grounds of the
    22  State Capitol.
