        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 8, 2002

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the week of May 11 through 19, 2002, as "Armed
     2     Forces Week" in Pennsylvania and encouraging the observance
     3     of May 18, 2002, as "Armed Forces Day" throughout this
     4     Commonwealth.

     5     WHEREAS, Armed Forces Day, since it was established by
     6  President Harry S. Truman in 1949, is annually celebrated on the
     7  third Saturday of May and is part of Armed Forces Week, which
     8  runs from the second Saturday to the third Sunday of the month;
     9  and

     1     WHEREAS, With pride in our nation's military strength and
     2  successes, we appreciate the members of our Army, Navy, Air
     3  Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Guard and the
     4  Reserves, and the government civilians and family members
     5  supporting them; and
     6     WHEREAS, This year, eight short months after suffering the
     7  most horrific act of war in our country's history, it is only
     8  befitting that we pay tribute to those whose sacrifices and
     9  selfless service purchased for us the privileges of freedom,
    10  democracy and unmatched opportunity that we enjoy in the United
    11  States, the greatest country on Earth; and
    12     WHEREAS, We currently have a large number of our armed forces
    13  actively engaged across the world in America's current war
    14  against terrorism; and
    15     WHEREAS, This year's Armed Forces Day theme is "United in
    16  Freedom" and military units from all branches of the military
    17  stationed in Pennsylvania will be conducting an Armed Forces Day
    18  program known as "Operation Connect With America" on May 17
    19  through 19, 2002, on City Island in the State capital of
    20  Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and
    21     WHEREAS, It is the intent of the House of Representatives to
    22  recognize the men and women of our armed forces for their
    23  dedicated service to both Commonwealth and country and commend
    24  them for the outstanding performance of their duties in
    25  America's current war against terrorism; therefore be it
    26     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
    27  week of May 11 through 19, 2002, as "Armed Forces Week" in
    28  Pennsylvania; and be it further
    29     RESOLVED, That the citizens of this Commonwealth be
    30  encouraged to observe May 18, 2002, as "Armed Forces Day" and to

     1  honor our armed forces by participating in "Operation Connect
     2  With America" and similar celebrations across Pennsylvania.
