        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 18, 1998

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating July 7 through 11, 1998, as "National Veterans
     2     Wheelchair Games Days" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The 18th National Veterans Wheelchair Games are
     4  being held in Pittsburgh, July 7 through 11, 1998; and
     5     WHEREAS, The National Veterans Wheelchair Games promote
     6  rehabilitation, wellness and camaraderie through athletic
     7  competition; and
     8     WHEREAS, The spirit of the games inspires each athlete to
     9  achieve a personal best; and
    10     WHEREAS, The National Veterans Wheelchair Games encourage
    11  veterans to become aware of their abilities and potential while


     1  promoting a spirit of healthy activity and fellowship; and
     2     WHEREAS, Many wheelchair sports had their beginning in the
     3  aftermath of World War II, when young disabled veterans played
     4  wheelchair basketball in Veterans Administration medical centers
     5  across the country; and
     6     WHEREAS, The first games were held in September 1981 on the
     7  grounds of the Veterans Administration Medical Center in
     8  Richmond, Virginia, with 71 disabled veterans; and
     9     WHEREAS, The 1998 games are expected to attract over 500
    10  athletes to the David Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh;
    11  therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate July 7
    13  through 11, 1998, as "National Veterans Wheelchair Games Days"
    14  in Pennsylvania.
