        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 17, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating October 20, 2005, as "Lights On Afterschool Day" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Lights On Afterschool, a national celebration of
     4  afterschool programs on October 20, promotes the critical
     5  importance of quality afterschool programs in the lives of
     6  children, their families and their communities; and
     7     WHEREAS, More than 28 million children in the United States
     8  have parents who work outside the home, and 14.3 million
     9  children have no place to go after school; and
    10     WHEREAS, Many afterschool programs across the country are
    11  facing funding shortfalls so severe that they are being forced
    12  to close their doors and turn off their lights; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate October
    14  20, 2005, as "Lights On Afterschool Day" in Pennsylvania.
