        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 14, 2002

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring the Borough of Canonsburg in Washington County, on its
     2     200th anniversary.

     3     WHEREAS, Canonsburg was founded by John Canon, who built and
     4  operated a flour and saw mill in what was then territory claimed
     5  by both Virginia and Pennsylvania; and
     6     WHEREAS, John Canon was appointed a justice of the county
     7  court, served as second in command of the county militia during
     8  the Revolutionary War and served two terms in the Pennsylvania
     9  General Assembly; and
    10     WHEREAS, On February 22, 1802, the Borough of Canonsburg was
    11  incorporated by the Pennsylvania Legislature, becoming the first
    12  borough in Washington County to be so chartered; and
    13     WHEREAS, Canonsburg was the location of the first educational


     1  institution west of the Appalachian Mountains that provided
     2  college-level instruction;
     3     WHEREAS, Initially chartered as The Canonsburg Academy and
     4  Library Company in 1794, the school later became Jefferson
     5  College, which ranked with Princeton and Harvard in prominence;
     6  and
     7     WHEREAS, The Canonsburg Steel and Iron Rolling Mill made its
     8  first sheet iron in 1883; and
     9     WHEREAS, Jobs in Canonsburg area mills and coal mines drew
    10  immigrants from Italy, Russia, Poland and Greece; and
    11     WHEREAS, Music legends Perry Como and Bobby Vinton are
    12  Canonsburg natives; and
    13     WHEREAS, With many economic, environmental, social,
    14  recreational and cultural opportunities, Canonsburg provides a
    15  highly desirable quality of life; therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the
    17  Borough of Canonsburg on the 200th anniversary of its
    18  incorporation and honor the borough on its outstanding
    19  contributions to the history and traditions of this great
    20  Commonwealth.
