A RESOLUTION 1 Congratulating the Chesapeake Bay Foundation on its 25th 2 Anniversary. 3 WHEREAS, The Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries are essential 4 economic, cultural and environmental resources to the region and 5 to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; and 6 WHEREAS, Almost one-half of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 7 lies in the Susquehanna River watershed which supplies over one- 8 half of the fresh water flowing into the Chesapeake Bay; and 9 WHEREAS, The condition of Pennsylvania's waterways directly 10 affects the health of the Chesapeake Bay; and 11 WHEREAS, There is widespread support among Pennsylvania's 12 citizens and its public officials for protecting this 13 Commonwealth's environment and the Chesapeake Bay; and
1 WHEREAS, The Chesapeake Bay Foundation has served for 25 2 years as a not-for-profit conservation organization, working to 3 "Save the Bay" through programs in environmental education, 4 environmental defense and land conservation; and 5 WHEREAS, The Chesapeake Bay Foundation has been a tireless 6 and effective advocate for the preservation and wise use of the 7 Chesapeake Bay and the tributaries that comprise the Bay's 8 64,000 square mile watershed, including the Susquehanna River; 9 and 10 WHEREAS, The Chesapeake Bay Foundation has maintained an 11 office in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, since 1986; and 12 WHEREAS, The Chesapeake Bay Foundation has over 80,000 13 members and volunteers, more than 10,000 of whom are 14 Pennsylvanians; and 15 WHEREAS, Numerous students and teachers have participated in 16 environmental education programs conducted by the Chesapeake Bay 17 Foundation in Pennsylvania, thereby heightening the awareness 18 and sensitivity of future generations to the plight and 19 complexity of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem and to Pennsylvania's 20 environment; and 21 WHEREAS, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has demonstrated a 22 commitment to the preservation and improvement of the Chesapeake 23 Bay and its tributaries by signing an agreement with Maryland, 24 Virginia, the District of Columbia and the Federal Government in 25 1983 and signing a second, more comprehensive Chesapeake Bay 26 Agreement in 1987 and by working with its neighboring 27 jurisdictions and private entities in protection efforts; and 28 WHEREAS, The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is an active partner 29 with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in mutual efforts to "Save 30 the Bay" and help protect Pennsylvania's environment; therefore 19920H0337R3721 - 2 -
1 be it 2 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 3 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania congratulate the Chesapeake Bay 4 Foundation on its 25th Anniversary and commend the Chesapeake 5 Bay Foundation for its efforts in protecting and preserving the 6 Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries and enhancing the 7 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's environment.
