        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JANUARY 20, 2000

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Declaring the week of January 30 through February 5, 2000, as
     2     "Catholic Schools Week" in this Commonwealth.

     3     WHEREAS, Catholic schools in this Commonwealth are
     4  celebrating "Catholic Schools Week" from January 30 through
     5  February 5, 2000; and
     6     WHEREAS, Catholic elementary and secondary schools, educating
     7  approximately 240,000 students annually, save State and local
     8  taxpayers more than 1.3 billion dollars each year; and
     9     WHEREAS, Catholic schools instill in young people a strong
    10  foundation of values, self-esteem, self-confidence and

     1  leadership skills; and
     2     WHEREAS, Catholic schools, in providing young people with
     3  solid values and academic skills needed in becoming responsible
     4  citizens of this Commonwealth and nation, have a dropout rate of
     5  less than 3% and a postgraduate higher education enrollment rate
     6  of 80%; therefore be it
     7     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare the week
     8  of January 30 through February 5, 2000, as "Catholic Schools
     9  Week" in this Commonwealth and express congratulations and
    10  appreciation to Catholic elementary and secondary schools across
    11  this Commonwealth on the occasion of "Catholic Schools Week" in
    12  2000.
