INTRODUCED BY PERZEL, MAY 2, 2005

INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 2, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

1 Designating the month of May 2005, as "Carcinoid Awareness
     2 Month" in Pennsylvania.

3 WHEREAS, Carcinoid cancer, the result of changes in the
4 gastrointestinal system, is considered a rare disease; and
5 WHEREAS, This disease causes neuroendocrine cells to form
6 slow-growing, microscopic tumors and, if untreated, creates
7 numerous serious symptoms, even death; and
8 WHEREAS, Carcinoid cancer is commonly misdiagnosed due to its
9 symptomatic similarities to irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety,
10 asthma and Crohn's disease; and
11 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Carcinoid Cancer Advocacy Network
12 has a goal to increase awareness in the medical community of the
13 need for early diagnosis, appropriate treatment and better
14 monitoring of carcinoid cancer; and
15 WHEREAS, The lack of awareness of carcinoid cancer by many
16 health care providers all too frequently results in untimely
17 death because of faulty diagnoses; and

1 WHEREAS, It is desirable that the public and the medical
2 community in our State work in concert to spread awareness about
3 carcinoid cancer to ensure that research, screening, prevention
4 strategies and improved treatments are in place; and
5 WHEREAS, It is appropriate to set aside a time to increase
6 understanding of carcinoid cancer, the importance of early
7 detection and the advances which are being made to eliminate
8 this disease; therefore be it
9 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
10 month of May 2005 as "Carcinoid Awareness Month" in
11 Pennsylvania; and be it further
12 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage all
13 citizens to learn more about carcinoid cancer, participate in
    14  voluntary education programs and fund research to find a cure;
    15 and be it further
16 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution shall be transmitted
