A RESOLUTION 1 Urging the Governor to proclaim the week of October 14-21, 1984, 2 as "Pennsylvania Housing Week." 3 WHEREAS, The opportunity to own one's own home and live in 4 decent housing is the foundation for American family life and a 5 source of economic, social and political strength; and 6 WHEREAS, The housing industry has led this Nation to economic 7 recovery following every recession since World War II by 8 providing employment opportunities and millions of productive 9 jobs for the unemployed generating billions of dollars worth of 10 tax revenue and by creating demand for goods and services; and 11 WHEREAS, The housing industry in 1984, although accounting 12 for only 3.4% of the real gross national product, was 13 responsible for 30% of the total economic growth, a 14 $15,000,000,000 real increase in the gross national product 15 during the year; and 16 WHEREAS, A sustained and strong housing recovery is essential 17 for this Nation's and the Pennsylvania's long-term economic
1 recovery and future economic development; and 2 WHEREAS, It is at this time appropriate to reaffirm 3 Pennsylvania's historic commitment to housing and the dream of 4 home ownership and to recognize the economic opportunities 5 created by the present housing recovery; and 6 WHEREAS, The housing industry epitomizes the principle and 7 spirit of free enterprise in the economic system of the Nation 8 and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; therefore be it 9 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 10 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania urge the Governor to proclaim the 11 week of October 14, 1984 through October 21, 1984, as 12 "Pennsylvania Housing Week," in recognition of the central role 13 of home ownership and housing production to the livelihood of 14 the citizens of Pennsylvania.
