A RESOLUTION
Honoring Jenkintown Borough on its 140th anniversary.
WHEREAS, Jenkintown Borough, one of the oldest boroughs of
Montgomery County, is located just outside of Philadelphia along
State Route 611; and
WHEREAS, The community was named for William Jenkins, a
pioneer settler, and was founded in 1697 and incorporated into a
borough in 1874; and
WHEREAS, The borough is approximately .58 of a square mile
and is home to 4,500 residents; and
WHEREAS, Jenkintown is truly one of the most unique
communities in Montgomery County; and
WHEREAS, Jenkintown is a mostly residential community
separated into east and west by the business district that runs
along the State Route 611 corridor; and

WHEREAS, The residential district consists of a traditional
mix of detached single-family homes, duplexes and row homes and
at the center of this mix are two important institutions,
Jenkintown Elementary School and Jenkintown High School; and
WHEREAS, Jenkintown Borough is a pedestrian-oriented
community in which residents walk to stores, the post office and
church, their children walk to school, the playground and their
friends' houses, and patrons are able to easily walk the central
business district; and
WHEREAS, At the heart of its past is the Jenkintown Fire
Department, comprised of two fire companies founded more than
125 years ago; and
WHEREAS, The Jenkintown Fire Department is an all-volunteer
department consisting of the Pioneer Fire Company No. 1 and the
Independent Fire Company; and
WHEREAS, The Pioneer Fire Company was organized in 1884 and
the Independent Fire Company was organized in 1889; and
WHEREAS, The fire department has a total membership of
approximately 150, with 50 active firefighting crew members; and
WHEREAS, Notable people from Jenkintown include Jim Bidlack,
professor at the University of Central Oklahoma and founder of
The Genome Industry; Bradley Cooper, actor; Adam F. Goldberg,
producer of the television series "The Goldbergs," which is set
in Jenkintown; and Ezra Pound, poet and critic who was a major
figure in the early modernist movement; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor Jenkintown
Borough on its 140th anniversary and extend its congratulations
and sincere appreciation to the borough; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
all the elected officials of Jenkintown.
