A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of October 9 through 15, 2023, as "United
States Navy Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The United States Navy has honorably served our
nation for 248 years; and
WHEREAS, Since 2005, each year the United States Navy has
docked in up to 15 cities in our nation for one week periods, in
celebration of its accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, These celebrations have become known as Navy Weeks;
and
WHEREAS, This year, Philadelphia will be the 13th
and final
city where the United States Navy will dock for Navy Weeks; and
WHEREAS, Two navy ships, the USS James E. Williams and the
USS Cooperstown, will be docking in the Philadelphia harbor
during the week of October 9 through 15, 2023; and
WHEREAS, Navy Weeks are designed to show Americans how the

United States Navy is deployed, the duties the United States
Navy undertakes and why a strong navy is vital to the security
of our nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, Navy Weeks have been the primary outreach effort
into areas of the country without a significant naval presence;
and
WHEREAS, Navy Week focuses on United States Navy outreach
assets, equipment and personnel for a week-long series of around
75 to 100 events with local and statewide organizations; and
WHEREAS, United States Navy entities, such as the Blue
Angels, the Navy Parachute Team, Navy bands, Navy divers,
namesake ship and submarine crews and hometown local sailors all
participate in Navy Weeks to inform and promote the United
States Navy's mission; and
WHEREAS, Homecoming 250 will consist of spectacular
celebrations on the banks of the Delaware River for the United
States Navy and the United States Marine Corps 250th
anniversaries, to be held in Philadelphia in 2025; and
WHEREAS, Philadelphia is the birthplace of the United States
Navy and the United States Marine Corps which were founded on
October 13, 1775, and November 15, 1775, respectively; and
WHEREAS, The United States Marine Corps will be in attendance
for Homecoming 250 and will lead the honor guard in a parade
through Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, The United States Marine Corps will host the 100th
Marine Corps Birthday Ball in Philadelphia, where the first
annual ball was held by General John A. Lejeune in 1925; and
WHEREAS, The honorable men and women of the United States
Navy have given their lives to protect our nation and keep our
communities prosperous and secure; therefore be it
