        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 12, 1997

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of May 18 through 24, 1997, as "Emergency
     2     Medical Services Week" in Pennsylvania; designating May 18,
     3     1997, as "City Recognition and Appreciation Day" in
     4     Pennsylvania; and designating May 24, 1997, as "Emergency
     5     Medical Services Day" in Pennsylvania.

     6     WHEREAS, The emergency medical services system in this
     7  Commonwealth has been developed to provide emergency services
     8  and care to the sick and injured and to provide transportation
     9  to an appropriate medical or health care facility; and
    10     WHEREAS, The citizens of this Commonwealth benefit daily from
    11  this system and from the knowledge, skill, specialized training

     1  and services of those providers who devote their lives to saving
     2  the lives of others and who perform extraordinary public
     3  services under stressful and even dangerous and hazardous
     4  conditions; and
     5     WHEREAS, Rapid access to quality and professional emergency
     6  medical services and care dramatically improves the probability
     7  of survival and recovery for those who experience sudden illness
     8  or injury; and
     9     WHEREAS, The emergency medical services community consists of
    10  volunteer and paid providers, including physicians, nurses,
    11  paramedics, emergency medical technicians, aeromedical
    12  personnel, first responders, ambulance attendants, ambulance
    13  drivers, police officers, firefighters and emergency services
    14  dispatchers, as well as educators and administrators who support
    15  and assist emergency medical services and in many instances the
    16  public, who together combine to comprise and link the emergency
    17  medical services network; and
    18     WHEREAS, In appreciation and recognition of the organized and
    19  coordinated efforts of the Pennsylvania emergency medical
    20  services system, those professionals who directly provide these
    21  services and those who support and assist emergency medical
    22  services, the Commonwealth shall set aside a week to
    23  commemorate, appreciate, recognize and support planned
    24  activities in this Commonwealth; and
    25     WHEREAS, The designation of "Emergency Medical Services Week"
    26  further serves to inform the citizens of this Commonwealth of
    27  the availability, importance and capability of their emergency
    28  medical services system and to educate the citizens of this
    29  Commonwealth about injury and illness prevention and what to do
    30  when confronted with a medical emergency, as well as to

     1  encourage citizens to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation, plan
     2  and practice home and highway safety and instruct all family
     3  members on the proper and appropriate use of the emergency
     4  medical services system; therefore be it
     5     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
     6  value and the accomplishments of the emergency medical services
     7  community by designating the week of May 18 through 24, 1997, as
     8  "Emergency Medical Services Week" in Pennsylvania; and be it
     9  further
    10     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate Sunday,
    11  May 18, 1997, as "Citizen Recognition and Appreciation Day" for
    12  the emergency medical services community to acknowledge the
    13  citizens of Pennsylvania who participate in cardiopulmonary
    14  resuscitation, first aid, fundraising and other activities that
    15  support emergency medical services in their communities; and be
    16  it further
    17     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate
    18  Saturday, May 24, 1997, as "Emergency Medical Services Day" for
    19  the purpose of appreciating, supporting and recognizing the
    20  professionals who make up the entire emergency medical services
    21  community and all citizens who support and assist service
    22  providers in this Commonwealth.
