        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 20, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of April 2007 as "Pennsylvania Community
     2     College Month."

     3     WHEREAS, More than 380,000 students are enrolled in credit
     4  and noncredit programs at Pennsylvania community colleges; and
     5     WHEREAS, More than one in four credit students are enrolled
     6  in science, technology, engineering or mathematics programs, and
     7  60% of credit students are enrolled in transfer programs; and
     8     WHEREAS, Community colleges have developed more than 950
     9  articulation agreements to ensure that students seamlessly
    10  transition from the community college to a four-year degree; and
    11     WHEREAS, Community colleges offer individualized credit and
    12  noncredit courses and programs that enhance the work force

     1  pipeline and stimulate the Commonwealth's economy; and
     2     WHEREAS, Community colleges offer and support dual enrollment
     3  of more than 4,380 high school students who represent half of
     4  the Commonwealth's school districts; and
     5     WHEREAS, More than 20,750 students are enrolled in nearly
     6  1,070 distance learning courses and programs offered by the
     7  community colleges so students can build their academic
     8  credentials and certifications while maintaining their work
     9  schedules and family responsibilities; and
    10     WHEREAS, Community colleges offer work force development and
    11  public safety training throughout this Commonwealth, focusing on
    12  industry clusters and high-priority occupations; and
    13     WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's emergent and incumbent work
    14  force obtains and renews required certifications through
    15  community colleges; and
    16     WHEREAS, Community colleges facilitate high-tech career
    17  pathways with seamless curricula by collaborating in 2+2+2
    18  project grants; therefore be it
    19     RESOLVED, That, in special recognition of community colleges
    20  and their exemplary role in work force development in this
    21  Commonwealth, the House of Representatives designate the month
    22  of April 2007 as "Pennsylvania Community College Month" and
    23  encourage all citizens to recognize, appreciate and support the
    24  contributions these institutions make to their communities and
    25  our Commonwealth.
