        SENATOR RHOADES, EDUCATION, IN SENATE, AS AMENDED, JUNE 10, 2003


                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An
     2     act relating to the public school system, including certain
     3     provisions applicable as well to private and parochial
     4     schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the
     5     laws relating thereto," providing for firefighter and
     6     emergency service training as creditable high school courses.

     7     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     8  hereby enacts as follows:
     9     Section 1.  The act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), known
    10  as the Public School Code of 1949, is amended by adding a
    11  section to read:
    12     Section 1550.  Firefighter and Emergency Service Training.--   <--
    13  (a)  Firefighter and emergency service training may be added to   <--
    14  high school curricula (A)  BEGINNING WITH THE 2003-2004 SCHOOL    <--

     1  YEAR AND EACH SCHOOL YEAR THEREAFTER, A SCHOOL DISTRICT MAY
     2  OFFER FIREFIGHTER AND EMERGENCY SERVICE TRAINING as credit-
     3  earning courses.
     4     (b)  The SUCH courses may be made available only to students   <--
     5  sixteen (16) years of age or older and may include:
     6     (1)  Training as a firefighter I from the National Board of
     7  Professional Qualifications.
     8     (2)  Training as an emergency medical technician by the
     9  Department of Health under the act of July 3, 1985 (P.L.164,
    10  No.45), known as the "Emergency Medical Services Act."
    11     (c)  Any person who provides training under this section and
    12  who has direct contact with students receiving training shall be
    13  subject to the provisions of section 111.
    14     (d)  If the school district adds A SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT        <--
    15  OFFERS firefighter and emergency service training as credit-
    16  earning courses, the school district shall provide                <--
    17  transportation and supervision for TO AND SUPERVISION DURING ANY  <--
    18  firefighter and emergency service training PROGRAM that takes     <--
    19  place off school grounds. Supervision of training shall be
    20  conducted as a cooperative education program in accordance with
    21  the provisions of 22 Pa. Code § 11.28 (relating to out-of-school
    22  programs) or any regulation promulgated subsequently to replace   <--
    23  that section. ITS SUCCESSORS.                                     <--
    24     Section 2.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
