A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1 Designating April 24, 2001, as "Pennsylvania's Day of 2 Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923." 3 WHEREAS, One and one-half million men, women and children of 4 Armenian descent were victims of the brutal genocide perpetrated 5 by the Turkish Ottoman Empire from 1915 to 1923; and 6 WHEREAS, The Armenian genocide and massacres of the Armenian 7 people have been recognized as an attempt to eliminate all 8 traces of a thriving and noble civilization more than 3,000 9 years old; and 10 WHEREAS, Revisionists still inexplicably deny the existence 11 of these horrific events; and 12 WHEREAS, Modern Turkey continues to deny and distort the
1 facts of the Armenian genocide and honors the perpetrators of 2 that crime against humanity as national heroes; and 3 WHEREAS, Before the implementation of the Holocaust of 4 European Jews, in order to encourage his followers, Adolf Hitler 5 asked, "Who remembers the Armenians?"; and 6 WHEREAS, By consistently remembering and openly condemning 7 the atrocities committed against the Armenians, Pennsylvanians 8 affirm the need for constant vigilance to prevent similar 9 atrocities in the future; and 10 WHEREAS, The Armenian people have not received reparations 11 for their losses; and 12 WHEREAS, Recognition of the 86th anniversary of the Armenian 13 genocide and education about past horrors is crucial to ensuring 14 against future genocide; and 15 WHEREAS, Armenia is now a free and independent republic, 16 having embraced democracy following nearly 70 years of 17 oppressive Soviet domination; and 18 WHEREAS, Armenian Americans living in Pennsylvania have 19 greatly enriched this Commonwealth through their leadership in 20 business, agriculture, academia, government and the arts; 21 therefore be it 22 RESOLVED (the Senate concurring), That the General Assembly 23 of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania designate April 24, 2001, as 24 "Pennsylvania's Day of Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide of 25 1915-1923"; and be it further 26 RESOLVED, That the Chief Clerk of the House of 27 Representatives transmit copies of this resolution to the 28 Pennsylvania congressional delegation and to the Armenian 29 National Committee of Pennsylvania.
