A RESOLUTION

Memorializing the Congress of the United States to recognize the

2

dedication and sacrifice of firefighters by establishing a

3

National Firefighters' Day.

4

WHEREAS, In 2007 there were an estimated 530,000 structure

5

fires in the United States; and

6

WHEREAS, Approximately 3,430 civilians and 118 firefighters

7

were killed in fires in 2007; and

8

WHEREAS, Fire kills more Americans than all natural disasters

9

combined; and

10

WHEREAS, Firefighters perform selfless tasks quietly and

11

often without recognition, risking their lives daily to protect

12

the lives and property of the citizens of this nation; and

13

WHEREAS, Changes in society and in the environment have

14

increased the dangers these individuals face daily in the

performance of their duties as protectors of the citizens and

2

property of this nation; and

3

WHEREAS, The increased threat of terrorism, illicit drug labs

4

and hazardous material incidents have placed firefighters in

5

greater danger than ever before; and

6

WHEREAS, The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and the

7

heightened awareness of future threats have only increased the

8

role of firefighters as first responders; and

9

WHEREAS, The time that firefighters devote to protecting the

10

lives and property of citizens of this nation represents time

11

taken away from family members; therefore be it

12

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the

13

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania call upon the Congress of the

14

United States to recognize the dedication and sacrifice of

15

firefighters by establishing a National Firefighters' Day; and

16

be it further

17

RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to

18

the President of the United States and to presiding officers of

19

each house of Congress and to each member of Congress from

20

Pennsylvania.
