           WILLIAMS, DeWEESE, FATTAH, FREEMAN, WAMBACH AND R. C. WRIGHT,
           APRIL 13, 1983

        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, APRIL 18, 1983

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Protesting the sale of South African gold currency within the
     2     Commonwealth.

     3     WHEREAS, Despite the fact that over 80% of its population is
     4  nonwhite, the Republic of South Africa rigidly pursues the
     5  repressive policy of apartheid, a system of racial segregation
     6  intended to promote and maintain white ascendancy; and
     7     WHEREAS, A well-financed advertising campaign is in progress
     8  in Pennsylvania and throughout the United States promoting the
     9  sale of South Africa's gold Krugerrand coin; and
    10     WHEREAS, The General Assembly staunchly endorses the
    11  principle of equal rights for all persons and is concerned that
    12  its citizens may not be aware that purchase of the Krugerrand
    13  contributes to the support of the cruel apartheid policies of
    14  the Republic of South Africa; therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
    16  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania hereby protest the sale of Republic
    17  of South Africa gold currency in the Commonwealth and urge the


     1  citizens of this Commonwealth not to purchase the Krugerrand
     2  coin.
