Subject: | Designating May 2018 as Older Americans Month in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the month of May 2018 as Older Americans Month. Our nation has made great strides to support older Americans as they transition into their new phase of life, and since 1963, we have honored their legacies and ongoing contributions. In Pennsylvania, during this monthly designation, we recognize the contributions made by older persons, and we pay tribute to their accomplishments within our communities. The 2018 theme, “Engage at Every Age,” proclaims that you are never too old to participate in activities that can enrich your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Older Americans Month also recognizes the ways that older Americans contribute to and engage with their communities. Older Americans are working longer, trying new things, and becoming more involved in their communities. They are volunteering their time, striving for wellness, focusing on their independence, and advocating for themselves and others. It is imperative that we encourage older citizens to take an active role in their communities, as well as recognize and encourage their participation when they do. Recognizing the contributions of older Americans will hopefully lead to their continued engagement, to society’s enrichment, and their overall emotional health. On behalf of older citizens in this Commonwealth, I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this resolution. |
