Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 21, 2018 10:56 AM
From: Senator Jake Corman
To: All Senate members
Subject: Timothy J. Piazza Antihazing Law

In the near future, I plan to introduce comprehensive legislation to put an end to the growing number of hazing injuries and deaths in Pennsylvania.

The bill is named after Timothy Piazza, a sophomore engineering student at Penn State University who died on February 4, 2017, as a result of hazing at a fraternity. The intent of this legislation is clear – to prevent death or serious injury due to hazing so that families, such as Tim’s, never experience tragedies ever again.

The legislation puts forth a comprehensive rewrite of the Commonwealth’s current antihazing law, providing prevention, enforcement and transparency. The bill increases penalties for all of those involved in hazing and requires schools to have policies and reporting procedures in place to stop hazing and inform students and parents of what is happening on campus.

This legislation has been a product of many meetings with many stakeholders and I believe will prevent tragic deaths like Tim’s from ever happening again.

I hope that you can join me in cosponsoring this important piece of legislation.

Introduced as SB1090
