Subject: | Service Dogs |
Please join me in cosponsoring legislation to update the use of the term service dogs. It is now very common to see individuals using service dogs or training service dogs. These dogs can be used for helping individuals with visual impairments, hearing impairments, mental illnesses, PTSD, seizure disorders, mobility issues and diabetes, just to name a few. As their usefulness continues to expand, so does our need to provide for them under the law. Current law limits the use of service dog to a dog guide for an individual who is blind, a hearing dog for an individual who is deaf or audibly impaired or a service dog for an individual who is physically limited. While this language does provide protections for a number of individuals who use service dogs, it does not cover the full spectrum of the new and innovative ways service, guide and support dogs are being utilized to accommodate individuals. Please join me in expanding the use of these animals to include a service, guide or support dog for an individual with a disability. |
