Subject: | Official State Mineral |
I plan to introduce legislation that would designate quartz as the official state mineral of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I met with first grade students of Pennell Elementary School in Aston, Delaware County, who worked very diligently to determine a fitting state rock. I was very proud of the students and all the work they put into researching this topic. Their teacher led the first grade class in setting forth a statewide, social media campaign that included a video produced by the class to help determine what mineral should be the state rock. The winning selection was quartz. However, quartz is a mineral. Quartz is abundant in this Commonwealth, and can be found across the state in many forms and varieties. This is not the first time a Delaware County school has helped initiate a proposal for a new state symbol. In 1974, the firefly (lightning bug) was designated the official state insect following a successful effort by students of Highland Park Elementary School in the Upper Darby School District, part of Senator McGarrigle’s 26th Senatorial District. Currently, there is no designated official state rock or official state mineral for Pennsylvania. Please join me in designating quartz as the official state mineral of Pennsylvania. |
