Subject: | American Red Cross Month (March 2017) |
Please join us in cosponsoring a resolution designating March 2017 as "American Red Cross Month" in Pennsylvania. Today's Red Cross is a volunteer-led humanitarian organization that provides relief to victims of disasters and helps our citizens prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. In fiscal year 2015, the Red Cross responded to 2,479 disasters statewide and 4,111 families were assisted financially statewide. 7,252 volunteers operated statewide. This year, the Red Cross is highlighting their Extended Care Program, which helps victims of disasters — including flooding, fires and collapsed buildings — to resume their normal way of living as quickly as possible. Families receive immediate assistance that allows them to remain close to their personal support systems and to avoid shelters or long-term homelessness. The Extended Care Program began in 1995 as a pilot project conducted by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross. In July 2000, the American Red Cross received a $1 million grant from PEMA to expand the project statewide. Since then, 36 Red Cross chapters serving 59 counties across the Commonwealth have participated in the program at one time or another. As of June 2016, Extended Care has helped 9,054 families recover from major disasters of all types, and the personalized, collaborative approach of the initiative has resulted in millions in direct assistance to thousands of Pennsylvania residents. Last year, SR 299 was sponsored by Senators Vulakovich, Baker, Argall, Aument, Bartolotta, Browne, Costa, Dinniman, Eichelberger, Farnese, Fontana, Gordner, Greenleaf, Hughes, Hutchinson, Kitchen, Mensch, Rafferty, Reschenthaler, Sabatina, Scavello, Teplitz, Ward, White, and Yudichak. Please join us in recognizing the work of the American Red Cross in Pennsylvania by cosponsoring this measure. If you have any questions, please contact Nate Silcox, of Sen. Vulakovich's staff, at 717-787-6538. |
