MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 6, 2016 03:15 PM
From: Senator Camera Bartolotta
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution Recognizing July 4-10, 2016 as Whiskey Rebellion Heritage Week

In the near future, I will introduce a resolution recognizing July 4-10, 2016 as “Whiskey Rebellion Heritage Week” in Pennsylvania.

The Whiskey Rebellion, one of the most notable events of early American history, took place in Washington County from 1791-1794 when David Bradford, noted attorney and community leader, helped to lead a rebellion against the federal excise tax on whiskey passed in 1791. Governor of Virginia, Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee, father of the Civil War General Robert E. Lee and hero of the Revolutionary War, ended the rebellion when he led a federal militia of nearly 13,000 men into Washington, Westmoreland and Allegheny Counties. Bradford’s Main Street residence in the city of Washington, built in 1788, remains a historical site maintained by the David Bradford House Association.

In an effort to recognize this noteworthy moment in history, a week-long schedule of events will take place in Washington County the first week in July to honor the period of America’s early days through historic reenactments, period exhibitions and demonstrations, family fun, frontier art, heritage music and food, shining a national spotlight on the city, county and region. Community-focused entertainment will combine with nationally renowned artists to create a festival that acknowledges the past, celebrates the present and looks toward the future.

Please join me to co-sponsor this resolution which is intended to acknowledge the significance of the Whiskey Rebellion to our history and to western Pennsylvania.
