| Subject: | Resolution Recognizing May 17th as Pennsylvania Health Care Information Technology Awareness Day |
| I will soon be introducing a resolution recognizing May 17th as “Pennsylvania Health Care Information Technology Awareness Day”. The United States spends more than $3 trillion on health care each year, representing 17.5% of gross domestic product nationally. Spending on health care has increased 40% from just a decade ago and, despite attempts to improve efficiencies, some of that spending is unnecessary and spent on clinical and administrative waste, theft and excess costs. The Commonwealth has taken some appropriate steps to address these rising costs. Act 121 of 2012 established the Pennsylvania eHealth Partnership Authority and created a health information exchange in Pennsylvania. Since the passage of Act 121, Pennsylvania's hospitals and health systems have outpaced hospitals nationally in their adoption and use of clinical information technology and information management systems. However, there is still more work to be done to lower health care costs in Pennsylvania and nationally. The intent of this resolution is to continue promoting better health care through broader adoption of advanced health care information technology and management systems.
