Subject: | Designating May 2016 as Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month |
In the near future I will be introducing a resolution which would designate May 2016 as Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month in the Commonwealth. The American Cancer Society estimates that 83,510 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in 2016 and that 13,650 deaths will occur from melanoma. Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old and the second most common form of cancer for adolescents and young adults 15-29 years old. It is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Melanoma and other skin cancers are highly treatable if detected early and simple steps can protect your skin from ultraviolent radiation. It is my hope that this resolution declaring May 2016 as Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month will promote the prevention and early detection of melanoma and other skin cancers to individuals in the Commonwealth. |
