Subject: | AKA Day Resolution |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designating March 22, 2016 as “Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Day” in Pennsylvania. Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) is the oldest Greek-lettered organization established by African American college-educated women. AKA was founded by Ethel Hedgeman in Washington, DC in 1908. AKA is dedicated to promoting peace and improving the quality of life for citizens worldwide. The sorority’s functions have grown over the years to engage members worldwide in advocacy and service projects to improve socioeconomic, racial, political and environmental conditions. To that end, the AKAs recently initiated "Launching New Dimensions of Service," a group of programs designed to address community needs in five target areas: educational enrichment, health promotion, family strengthening, environmental ownership, and global impact. Currently, AKA has a nucleus of 283,000 members in both graduate and undergraduate chapters. Membership is comprised of distinguished women who boast excellent academic records, proven leadership skills, and are involved in the global community through advocacy and service. This year, the AKAs welcome the newly-created chapter Omega Zeta Omega that hails from Bucks County, strengthening the impact this organization has to effect change in Pennsylvania. I ask you to join me in celebrating AKA day in Pennsylvania by cosponsoring this resolution. Please contact my office if you have any questions. |
