Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 28, 2016 12:31 PM
From: Senator Rob Teplitz
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution – Charter Day

In the near future, I plan on introducing a resolution observing March 14, 2016 as "Charter Day" in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania law establishes the observance of March fourteenth of each year as Charter Day.

The "charter" in Charter Day refers to the charter that King Charles II of Great Britain granted Pennsylvania founder, William Penn, on March 4, 1681. William Penn's charter exists as the formal beginning of the colony and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and through it William Penn established the first example of democracy in what would become the United States of America. It is important for the citizens of Pennsylvania to understand the overall history of the Commonwealth and how the principles of governance within the Commonwealth date back to the beliefs of William Penn.

In celebration of Pennsylvania's 335th birthday, please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution and acknowledging organizations that strive to educate the citizens of Pennsylvania about the Commonwealth's heritage.

Introduced as SR298
