| Subject: | Legislation – Staff Sergeant Brian K. Mowery Memorial Bridge Designation |
| In the near future, I plan on introducing legislation to commemorate the life and service of Staff Sergeant Brian K. Mowery by naming the bridge over Armstrong Creek in Halifax Township, Dauphin County, as the Staff Sergeant Brian K. Mowery Memorial Bridge. His wife Sharon, as well as some of his children and siblings, remains in the Halifax area. Brian K. Mowery was born December 30, 1961, to Harry E. and Patricia M. Mowery. Staff Sergeant Mowery bravely served in the United States Marine Corps from 1979 through 1985. Mowery later enlisted in the Pennsylvania National Guard as an infantry team leader and a motor transport operator. During this time, he also served in the Kosovo Peacekeeping Mission from 2003 through 2004 and aided in disaster relief following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Beginning in 2010, Staff Sergeant Mowery became a proud member in the 131st Transportation Company of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard - Williamstown. Mowery was stationed in Afghanistan from January of 2011 until his death. Staff Sergeant Mowery lost his life July 18, 2011 while transporting necessary supplies near Bagram, Afghanistan where his convoy was attacked. A deadly improvised explosive device detonated, mortally wounding Mowery along with two other guardsmen. Pennsylvania’s Adjutant General, Major General Wesley Craig stated, “Brian Mowery exemplified what it means to be a noncommissioned officer and served as an example to the younger soldiers around him. He demonstrated leadership potential far above his rank and never hesitated to assume responsibility, no matter how big the challenge.” In honor and recognition of his service, Staff Sergeant Mowery was awarded two Army Commendation Medals, an Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, a NATO Medal, the Kosovo Campaign Medal, and the Governor’s Unit Citation. Please join me in honoring the life of Staff Sergeant Mowery, by cosponsoring this legislation to name the bridge over Armstrong Creek in his memory. |
