| Subject: | Resolution: Recognizing the Life and Legacy of Mr. Julian Bond |
| In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the life and legacy of Mr. Julian Bond, who passed away on August 15, 2015. Mr. Bond was a civil rights leader, activist and legislator. He was one of the founding members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, (SNCC). In 1965, he successfully ran for office in the Georgia Legislature but as a result of his public endorsement of SNCC’s opposition against the Vietnam War, his fellow Georgia legislators voted to remove him from his seat. However, in 1966 the United States Supreme Court ruled 9-0, that the vote to have him removed was unconstitutional and Mr. Bond resumed office. Mr. Bond would later go on to serve in the Georgia General Assembly for almost 20 years, serving in both the Georgia House of Representatives and the Georgia State Senate. In keeping with his legacy to promote civil rights and racial equality, he became the co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center and he later was elected to serve as the Chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 1998-2008. Mr. Bond’s life and legacy illustrated his passion for civil right and social justice throughout our nation.
