Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 26, 2015 02:54 PM
From: Senator Rob Teplitz and Sen. John N. Wozniak
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution – Distracted Driving Awareness Month

In the near future, Senator Wozniak and I plan on introducing a resolution designating the month of April 2015 as “Distracted Driving Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

Distracted driving is any activity that could divert a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving thus endangering driver, passenger, and bystander safety. Distraction occurs any time someone takes their eyes off the road, their hands off the wheel, and their mind off their primary task of driving safely. Any non-driving activity is a potential distraction and increases the risk of an accident.

The young and most inexperienced drivers are most at risk, 16 percent of all distracted driving crashes occur involving drivers under 20 years old. According to national statistics, in 2012, 3,328 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver and an additional 421,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver.

The best way to end distracted driving is to educate all Pennsylvanians about the danger it poses and continue to encourage safe driving habits.

Please join us in supporting this resolution.
