MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 6, 2014 03:50 PM
From: Senator Jake Corman
To: All Senate members
Subject: School Weather Emergency

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation to provide public schools with additional options to make up snow days in order to meet the Commonwealth’s requirement that school be kept open 180 days.

The bill will give schools the discretion of counting their school days in hours rather than days and provides them the option of rescheduling instructional days one Saturday per month.

In addition, the bill provides for students to be excused from school on Saturdays for religious or leadership activities and for teachers’ salaries and school subsides to be held harmless as a result of the weather emergency.

Similar school weather emergency provisions have been enacted on several occasions, most recently in 1996.

Thank you for your consideration.

Introduced as SB1281
