Subject:	Allegheny County - Flexibility in the Use of Funds under Coroners Education Board Act

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation amending the 2nd Class County Code to authorize the Allegheny County Medical Examiner to use funds collected from certain reports with more flexibility. Currently, a county coroner receives funds from autopsy, toxicology, inquisition or coroner's reports that may be utilized for training of the coroner and deputy coroner under the Coroners Education Board Law. Allegheny County no longer has a coroner’s office, but instead has an appointed Medical Examiner and also operates its own crime lab, making it unique. As such, the office has professionals that assist with the functions of the office, as well as equipment and training needs, for which these funds may not be used. My bill would allow the Allegheny County Medical Examiner to use the funds for related purposes (such as their crime lab) under the Coroners Education Board Act. This legislation is supported by the Allegheny County Executive, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner, and the PA Coroners Association.
