Subject: | Uniform Firearms Act - Background Checks |
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation to amend the Uniform Firearms Act to require the completion of a background check for all gun sales or transfers. Current law limits the applicability of background checks based on the gun’s barrel length and exempts certain transactions, including transactions involving “longarms” such as rifles and shotguns and transfers for all firearms between immediate family members. As the United States Congress continues to debate reforming federal gun laws, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania should be proactive in strengthening our gun laws to permit sales and transfers of firearms to those who are legally eligible to possess firearms after a background check. Expanded background checks have overwhelming support among Pennsylvania residents. According to a January 2013 Quinnipiac poll, 95% of Pennsylvanians polled favored expanded background checks. Respondents who identified themselves as gun owners supported expanded background checks by a margin of 95% to 4%. Please join me in sponsoring this important piece of legislation. |
