MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 23, 2018 10:54 AM
From: Representative Dave Reed
To: All House members
Subject: Proposed Legislation - Corrections Officers Personal Firearms

Please join me as a co-sponsor of legislation allowing the Department of Corrections to institute a policy to permit corrections officers at our state correctional institutions to bring their personal firearms to work and store them securely in their automobiles.

Corrections officers travelling to and from their workplace have been the subject of violence in recent years, and the U.S. House of Representatives recently passed legislation similar to this proposal. This proposal would provide officers who choose to use this option with some protection while they are travelling to and from their workplaces.

Under this legislation, a corrections officer who lawfully owns a firearm may carry and store a firearm in a vehicle at a state correctional institution, provided that the officer provides advanced written notice to the chief administrator of the institution, complies with all applicable laws governing firearms, and follows the departmental policies. Further, a chief administrator may revoke an officer’s ability to carry and store a firearm with written notice. The legislation will include limits on the allowable firearms and ammunition that corrections officers may use.

I ask that you please join me in cosponsoring this important legislation. Thank you.
