House of Representatives
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 12, 2018 11:15 AM
From: Representative Jim Marshall and Rep. Robert F. Matzie
To: All House members
Subject: Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail

In the near future, we will be offering a resolution encouraging Congress to accept the conclusions of the National Park Service to include Pennsylvania as part of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.

In 2008, Congress passed the Consolidated Natural Resources Act of 2008. This Act directed the Secretary of the Interior to complete a special resource study of the Eastern Legacy sites – sites associated with the preparation or return phases of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The Eastern Legacy has sites in Virginia, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Missouri, and Illinois.

The Secretary conducted the study and published the draft on its website. The comment period was from August 15, 2016 to September 30, 2016. The study was transmitted to Congress by the Secretary with a formal recommendation of adding three sites to the existing Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.

As a result of this study, Congressman Messer introduced H.R.3045, Eastern Legacy Extension Act which amends the National Trails System Act. Under H.R.3045, the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail would extend from the Ohio River in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (currently, the Trail extends from Wood River, Illinois).

Thank you and I hope you will consider co-sponsoring.
