MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 2, 2017 03:24 PM
From: Representative P. Michael Sturla
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Urging the United States Congress and President Trump to Reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution that would urge the United States Congress and President Donald Trump to quickly reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which expired on September 30, 2017.

CHIP provides low-cost health insurance to 9 million children up to age 19 (including 176,677 in Pennsylvania) who are uninsured and not eligible for Medical Assistance. The federal government enacted CHIP in 1997 based on Pennsylvania’s model. It was last reauthorized in 2015.

If the program is not reauthorized, Pennsylvania and 26 other states are projected to exhaust federal CHIP funds during January-March 2018. Four states are projected to exhaust their funds during October-December 2017 while the remaining 20 will exhaust funding during April-September 2018.
