Subject: | Recognizing National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week in PA |
In the coming weeks, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week in Pennsylvania from September 24th through September 30th. Literacy among our citizens is key to ensuring both the economic wellbeing of Pennsylvania as well as individuals and their families. Without literacy skills, a person’s ability to finish high school or equivalency programs, continue onto post-secondary degrees or complete job-training programs are negatively impacted. The resulting effects include the increased chance for unemployment or underemployment, impeding a person’s ability to financially care for their family. Adult literacy is also key to ensuring the educational success of future generations, as research shows that parents reading to children has a direct impact on the success of their children’s education. Health risks are also a threat. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 13 percent of Pennsylvania Adults lack the basic reading and math skills to read even a prescription or follow medical instructions. These points are demonstrative of the need to support programs and efforts to ensure everyone has the necessary literacy skills to succeed at home, at work and in society. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. |
