| Subject: | Resolution Honoring President John F. Kennedy’s 100th Birthday |
| In the near future, we will be introducing a resolution recognizing May 29, 2017, as “John F. Kennedy Day” in Pennsylvania to commemorate his 100th birthday. As you know, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy served as the 35th President of the United States. He was a decorated Lieutenant in the United States Navy during World War II, and received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, the Purple Heart, and the American Defense Service Medal. President Kennedy also served his country in the United States Congress, representing Massachusetts for 13 years as United States Representative and United States Senator. During President Kennedy’s inauguration in 1961, he inspired the American people to, “Ask not what your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country.” Throughout his term, President Kennedy sought to provide a check on the growing spread of communism and fight for democracy during the Cold War. He showed strong leadership during the Cuban Missile Crisis, helping to avert a nuclear war with the U.S.S.R and prevented the placement of short-range nuclear weapons near the United States. President Kennedy also founded the Peace Corps and challenged America to win the “Space Race” by placing a man on the moon before the close of the 1960’s. On November 22, 1963, President Kennedy was assassinated as his motorcade traveled through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas. After his assassination, Congress made the decision to re-designate the National Cultural Center as a living memorial, creating the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. For all of his important work for our country, we believe it is important to commemorate the 100th birthday of this great American. Please consider joining us as a sponsor of this legislation. |
