| Subject: | Pennsylvania Arson Dogs Appreciation Week Resolution |
| In the very near future, we plan to introduce a resolution designating the week of May 22-28, 2017, as Pennsylvania Arson Dogs Appreciation Week” in Pennsylvania. According to the National Fire Protection Association, there were an estimated 42,000 intentionally set structure fires during 2014-2015. These fires resulted in 362 civilian deaths and $1.07 billion in property damage. In 2015, there were an estimated 48,421 arson cases reported with an average dollar loss of $14,182 per incident according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Accelerant detection canines (arson dogs) are taught through extensive training to sniff out minute traces of accelerants that may have been used to start a fire. They save the department and community both time and money. These canines locate more accurate evidence samples, reducing the amount of costly analysis by the laboratory, speeding up investigations, and providing a higher conviction rate. Please join us in cosponsoring this resolution to help recognize the value and contribution accelerant detection canines make to fire departments, law enforcement agencies, and their communities. As well as give special acknowledgment to all fire and law enforcement investigative agencies for their dedicated and tireless service. |
