MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 20, 2017 04:29 PM
From: Representative Aaron Bernstine
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Condemning Assad / Syrian Weapons of Mass Destruction Attacks

On April 4, chemical weapons were used in an attack that killed dozens of people, including children, in Syria’s Idlib province. This attack has been widely condemned as barbaric and in violation of international law. The Syrian government has a history of using chemical weapons on its citizens.

As we know, the United States responded to this deplorable attack by targeting air strikes on the Syrian airfield from which the Assad regime is believed to have conducted the April 4 chemical weapons attack. President Trump stated that this military action was in the “vital national security interest of the United States to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons.”

There has been some discussion among members of Congress regarding potential consideration and approval of an authorization for the use of military force to allow for additional military action in Syria for the purpose of deterring further use of chemical weapons in Syria and the world.

Given that Congress has a vital role in authorizing the use of military force and given the tragedy that this chemical attack has brought to the victims and their community, I intend to introduce a resolution that expresses the House’s condemnation of the chemical attack and asks Congress to consider an authorization for the use of military force in Syria.

I encourage you to cosponsor this important and timely resolution. Thank you.
