MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 28, 2017 04:37 PM
From: Representative Stephen Kinsey
To: All House members
Subject: Designating April 2017 as “Community Service Appreciation Month” in the Commonwealth

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating April 2017 as “Community Service Appreciation Month” in the Commonwealth.

Every citizen of this Commonwealth who volunteers for community service displays not only a strong sense of civic pride, but a clear commitment to serving their fellow citizens. Each year, these individuals donate their time in support of foundations and non-profit corporations to better their communities, our Commonwealth, and our country.

Each year, approximately 2.8 million Pennsylvanians volunteer about 348 million hours in generous service. The Corporation for National and Community Service has estimated each hour of time volunteered holds a value of $22.63. These efforts, including time and money donated for the common good, should be applauded.

The Commonwealth shares the dedication of these volunteers through PennSERVE, which is an umbrella agency under the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. This program promotes community service initiatives throughout the Commonwealth. The mission of PennSERVE is “to encourage, develop and facilitate volunteer and citizen community service which builds upon the talents, strengths, opportunities and challenges of people and communities in ways which enhance the quality of life for all citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.”

I hope you will join me in recognizing the value of community service in Pennsylvania by supporting this resolution.
