Subject: Minimum Wage Reform
 
the near future, I plan to introduce legislation to increase the minimum wage rate in Pennsylvania to a level more consistent with those of other U.S. states. Presently, a total of 29 states and the District of Columbia have minimum wage rates above the Federal rate and Pennsylvania’s rate of $7.25 per hour. It is time for Pennsylvania to ensure our working families a living wage and in return boost the economy of the state.
My legislation will increase the minimum wage rate via following measures:
  • Effective 60 days after enactment, the minimum wage rate for employees will increase to $9.50 per hour. It will then increase incrementally every two months by a rate of $0.1875, for a period of two years.
  • Minor employees under the age of 18 will be paid the Federal minimum wage rate.
  • Starting 60 days after enactment, the minimum wage rate for tipped employees will increase incrementally by a rate of $0.2475, for a period of two years.
  • Owners of small businesses with less than $200,000 in gross annual sales would be permitted to pay employees a minimum wage that is the new Pennsylvania rate, minus 10% of the Federal minimum wage rate.
It is my feeling that we must advance this long overdue increase in Pennsylvania’s minimum wage rate in support of our workers and their families. Nothing is gained when families are forced to rely on government programs to subsidize insufficient wages. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.
