| Subject: | Recognizing May 1, 2017 as "Melanoma Monday" |
| In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing May 1, 2017, as "Melanoma Monday" in Pennsylvania. Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, develops in the melanocytes, which are the cells that produce melanin and give skin its color. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays, such as sunlight, tanning beds and sun lamps, is a major risk factor for most melanomas. While melanoma accounts for less than 1% of skin cancers, it causes a majority of skin cancer deaths. The American Cancer Society estimates that in the United States in 2017, approximately 87,110 new melanomas will be diagnosed, causing approximately 9,730 deaths. Regular skin exams, wearing sunscreen and other protective clothing, and avoiding artificial UV rays and the sun during peak hours of the day can help reduce the risk of melanoma and other types of skin cancer. If detected early, melanoma can be treated successfully. Please consider joining me in recognizing May 1, 2017, as "Melanoma Monday" in Pennsylvania in order to raise awareness of the causes and risk factors of melanoma and to promote prevention and early detection of this cancer. |
