MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 28, 2017 10:56 AM
From: Representative Tim Briggs
To: All House members
Subject: Suicide Prevention on College Campuses

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that will require universities and colleges to provide their students with round the clock access to individuals trained in suicide prevention.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for Americans between the age of 15 and 24. By providing support at all times of day or night to our students during a critical point in their lives and emotional development, it is my hope that these efforts will reduce the rate of suicide and suicide attempts on campuses across our Commonwealth.

This bill will be similar to New Jersey’s Madison Holleran Suicide Prevention Act and, along with requiring 24 hour access to individuals trained in suicide prevention, institutions will be required to notify all students of these services at the beginning of every semester.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.

Introduced as HB1140
