MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: "Borinqueneers" Postage Stamp (Former HR 80)

In the near future, I plan to re-introduce a resolution urging the Citizens’ Advisory Committee of the United States Postal Service to issue a postal stamp honoring the heroism of the “Borinqueneers” of the 65th Infantry Regiment of the United States Army, the only all-Hispanic unit in the history of the United States Army.

The “Borinqueneers” displayed valiant and meritorious service in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. While defending the United States, these brave soldiers earned over 600 Bronze Stars, more than 250 Silver Stars, nine Distinguished Service Crosses, one Medal of Honor and more than 2,700 Purple Hearts. Since inception of the unit, more than 61,000 Puerto Ricans have served as “Borinqueneers,” but their unsung heroic contributions and sacrifices have only been recently recognized with the awarding of the Congressional Gold Medal on April 13, 2016. Although bestowed the highest Congressional civilian honor, the country at large is unaware of who the “Borinqueneers” are. A commemorative stamp would change this.

Please join me in recognizing the “Borinqueneers” of the 65th Infantry Regiment by urging the production of a postal stamp created in their honor. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact my Harrisburg office at 717-705-1925.
